How to Convert Percentage to GPA on a 4.0 Scale
Many report cards show grades as percentages, but most U.S. applications ask for GPA on a 4.0 scale. Converting between the two takes two steps: map each percentage to a letter grade, then map the letter to grade points.
Percentage to GPA chart
| Percentage | Letter | GPA |
|---|---|---|
| 97–100 | A+ | 4.0 |
| 93–96 | A | 4.0 |
| 90–92 | A- | 3.7 |
| 87–89 | B+ | 3.3 |
| 83–86 | B | 3.0 |
| 80–82 | B- | 2.7 |
| 77–79 | C+ | 2.3 |
| 73–76 | C | 2.0 |
| 70–72 | C- | 1.7 |
| 67–69 | D+ | 1.3 |
| 65–66 | D | 1.0 |
| Below 65 | F | 0.0 |
Your school’s cutoffs may differ slightly. Some use a 10-point scale where 90–100 is an A and 80–89 is a B. Always use your own school’s scale if it’s published.
Why you shouldn’t just divide by 25
A popular shortcut is percentage ÷ 25 (so 88% becomes 3.52). It’s quick, but it doesn’t match how schools actually assign grade points, and it overstates low grades: 60% would become 2.4 instead of an F. Use the chart, convert each class separately, and then weight by credits.
Example
Say you have 94% in Math (4 credits), 88% in English (3), 81% in Biology (4) and 91% in History (3). These become A (4.0), B+ (3.3), B- (2.7) and A- (3.7). Quality points: 16 + 9.9 + 10.8 + 11.1 = 47.8 over 14 credits, giving a 3.41 GPA. Enter the letter grades into our GPA calculator to check it.
International students
Systems such as the UK classification, Indian or Pakistani percentage marks, or 10-point CGPA scales don’t map neatly onto the U.S. 4.0 scale. Universities often require an official evaluation from a credential service such as WES or ECE. Treat your own conversion as an estimate for planning, and report grades exactly as your transcript shows unless the application asks otherwise.
Converting a 10-point or 5-point scale
Some schools grade on a 10-point CGPA (common in India) or a 5-point scale. A rough proportional estimate is to divide by the maximum and multiply by 4, so an 8.0/10 becomes about 3.2. This is only a planning estimate, because each country’s grade distribution is different. An 8.0 CGPA at a demanding university may reflect stronger performance than the math suggests.
Frequently asked questions
Is 85% a good GPA?
85% usually converts to a B, or 3.0 on the 4.0 scale. That’s a solid average that meets many scholarship and graduate program minimums.
What GPA is 90 percent?
90% is typically an A-, worth 3.7. On a 10-point school scale where 90–100 is an A, it may count as a full 4.0.
What GPA is 75 percent?
75% generally falls in the C range, about 2.0 on the 4.0 scale.
Should I convert my overall percentage or each class?
Convert each class separately, then weight by credits. Converting one overall average can give a different, less accurate result, especially when classes carry different credits.
