Weighted vs Unweighted GPA: Which One Do Colleges Use?
If your report card lists both a 3.8 and a 4.4, you’re not alone in wondering which one matters. Both are real, and colleges use both, just in different ways.
Unweighted GPA in one sentence
Every class counts on the same 0 to 4.0 scale, so an A is a 4.0 whether it’s in AP Physics or study hall.
Weighted GPA in one sentence
Harder classes earn bonus points, usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual enrollment, so the scale often tops out at 5.0.
Side-by-side example
| Class | Grade | Unweighted | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|
| AP Calculus | A | 4.0 | 5.0 |
| Honors English | B+ | 3.3 | 3.8 |
| AP Chemistry | B | 3.0 | 4.0 |
| U.S. History | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| Average | 3.58 | 4.20 |
So which one do colleges use?
Both, through a third lens. Admissions officers see the GPA your school reports, but they also read your transcript to judge course rigor. Many selective colleges recalculate GPA using their own rules, often keeping only core academic subjects and applying their own weighting. The University of California system, for example, calculates its own capped weighted GPA from 10th and 11th grade A–G courses.
The takeaway: a weighted GPA can’t hide weak grades, and an unweighted GPA doesn’t erase a demanding schedule. Colleges look at both the grades and the difficulty behind them.
What should you put on applications?
Report exactly what your transcript shows and follow each application’s instructions. The Common App, for instance, asks for your GPA as your school reports it, along with the scale. Your counselor’s school profile tells colleges how your school weights grades.
Should you take the AP class?
Usually yes, if you can earn a B or better. Colleges value rigor, and the weighted bonus helps class rank. But a string of C’s in AP classes can hurt more than A’s in standard ones. Use the weighted mode of our GPA calculator to compare scenarios before you register.
How weighting affects class rank
Many high schools rank students by weighted GPA, which rewards students who take more AP and IB classes. That’s why two students with identical unweighted GPAs can be ranked very differently. Some schools no longer publish class rank at all, so colleges rely more on the transcript and school profile.
Common questions
Is a 4.0 weighted GPA good?
It depends on the unweighted GPA behind it. A 4.0 weighted could mean straight A’s in regular classes, or a mix of B’s in several AP courses. Both are solid, and colleges read the transcript to see which.
Can I convert weighted GPA to unweighted?
Only with your course list. Remove the bonus from each Honors, AP or IB grade and recalculate. Our GPA calculator does this instantly when you switch from weighted to unweighted mode.
Do colleges weight GPA in college?
No. College GPA is almost always unweighted on a 4.0 scale, weighted only by credit hours.
Bottom line
